Many often think that wine may not provide any concrete health benefits, but consumption in moderation will not produce adverse health effects either. In essence, people think wine doesn’t do good, but in moderation, may not do any harm either. The reality is that wine may do more than you think it does!

There has been quite a bit of research done on red wine consumption and its effects. With such studies and research, the general consensus seems to be that red wine may actually be good for you in a variety of different ways! Some research has linked red wine health benefits to an antioxidant known as resveratrol. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that comes from the grapes of the red wine. It is known to be anticarcinogenic and has the potential to inhibit tumor formation and growth. Additionally, resveratrol acts as a free radical scavenger and helps to slow oxidation of the LDL (low-density lipoproteins) aka bad cholesterol. This is important considering that bad cholesterol can be linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, there may be some studies that link regular wine consumption to gut health. A 2018 study reported that the polyphenols in red wine and grapes may also contribute to improving the gut microbiota. A study that took part in 2012, had similar results when they concluded that red wine compounds may actually have a prebiotic effect that can improve the gut microbiome.

Is Red Wine Good for Your Heart?

In addition to the resveratrol effect that red wine may have on cardiovascular disease, multiple studies have shown a positive link between moderate red wine drinking and overall heart health. A 2019 review reported that consumption of red wine could be linked to a lower risk of coronary heart disease. In essence, the research concluded that there may appear to be some positive effects on the heart from consumption of red wine. Other studies have noted that red wine may also be associated with reducing the formation of blood clots within the body as well as increasing the HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) for the heart. Now with that being said, this doesn’t mean that you can have wonderful heart health by solely drinking a lot of red wine each day. Of course, excess alcohol consumption can be bad for the body and lead to an addiction. It is important to note that while there may be positive health benefits linked to red wine consumption, a healthy diet and lifestyle is still incredibly important. The antioxidant effect of red wine may be present, but it is not as high as the antioxidant effect that fresh fruits have on the body. So drink wine in moderation and eat lots of fruits and vegetables, in order to get the best results for your heart!

Red Wine Consumption in Moderation

The best way to reap the health benefits of red wine is to drink it in moderation. Failure to do that, can lead to the opposite effect on the body. With that being said, some may question what moderation means for red wine? What is a moderate amount of red wine to drink? It is believed that a moderate and appropriate amount of red wine would be one 5-ounce glass of wine a day for women of all ages as well as men who are older than 65. For men that are 65 and younger, the appropriate amount of wine would be 2 glasses a day (10 ounces in total). It is best that people avoid alcohol completely if they are pregnant, have a family history of alcoholism, take certain medications, have heart failure, or have any sort of liver or pancreas disease that may be associated with alcohol.

So in other words, red wine may produce some positive health effects on the body! When consumed in moderation, you can enjoy some great health benefits from red wine. Just make sure to keep up a healthy diet and lifestyle for even better heart health! With that being said, now that you are aware that red wine may be helpful for you, feel free to sip on with a renewed sense of relief that red wine not only makes you feel good, but can also be good for you!
